I had no idea until now that the term "bowser" for a pump came from the inventor's name.

Seems like this is more an urban issue -- suburbs force car mobility by sprawl, no sidewalks, no safe bike system. Until needs and wants are available at the neighborhood level and non-car transport is convenient and safe, only urban areas stand to gain. That tracks with the trend of urban growth but doesn’t deal with the fact of sprawl itself.

Some clever advancements that combine easy charging for bikes and secure storage could be huge. We Even have long networks of rails to trails efforts where it could be pioneered, if doing it in cities first is too complicated.

So true. I'm a long-distance wimp, which always surprises people who know how mouthy I am about bicycle infrastructure. But I'm using a bike as delightful transport, not to break a sweat. Make it easy for coddled Americans like me to go long distances on an e-bike!
