I am not a fan of full size pickups and how many are used for normal commuting purposes. I'm even less of a fan of bad statistics. You quote the Ford F series is the most crashed vehicle and responsible for 25% of fatal crashes involving pickups. The F is also the most sold vehicle in the US and holds 34% class market share. So the stats you quote don't inform us at all about safety issues inherent in the F series.

The Ford F-150 is crashed more than any passenger car, truck, or SUV. That's pretty wild. And it's involved in 25% of the fatal pickup crashes -- all pickups, not just class. That's pretty wild. Given all that, it's easy to get affordable insurance for one.

If all vehicles had an equal likelihood of crashing then the most sold vehicle would be the most crashed vehicle. That isn't wild. It is predictable and says nothing about the safety of the F-150 relative to other vehicles.

The article didn't have a reference for the 25% stat and couldn't find it independently. If I look at death rates at iihs.org the F-150 is middle of the pack for large pickups. Compared to other vehicles, large pickups are about 20% safer for the pickup driver and 20% less safe for the other vehicle.

The thing that bugs me is that these high hoods are an entirely aesthetic choice. Actual commercial vehicles often have much more sloping hoods. These tall hoods just look cool, I guess.
